Whatsminer M73 Review: 470–526 TH/s Hydro-Cooled ASIC (2026)
The Whatsminer M73 (base model) is MicroBT's flagship hydro-cooled miner in the M70 generation, delivering 470–526 TH/s at 14.5 J/TH and ~7,200 W. Its key advantages are raw hashrate density and near-silent liquid-cooled operation — not energy efficiency, which is lower per TH than the air-cooled M70S.
This covers the base M73 only — not the M73S or M73S+. We do not fabricate ratings or profit projections.
Important: The M73 Is NOT More Efficient Than the M70S
The M73 runs at 14.5 J/TH — more electricity per terahash than the M70S (~13.5 J/TH) or M70 (~14.5 J/TH). The M73's advantages are: (1) 470–526 TH/s raw hashrate in a single chassis; (2) hydro cooling that is near-silent compared to air-cooled ASIC fans; (3) high rack density for large-scale operations. If energy efficiency is your priority, the M70S is the better choice.

Hashrate vs. Efficiency: Understanding the Trade-Off
The M73 offers up to ~2× the hashrate of the M70S (470–526 vs. ~258 TH/s) at ~2.06× the power draw (~7,200 vs. ~3,500 W). In terms of electricity cost per TH:
- M70S at $0.07/kWh, 258 TH/s
- $0.682/TH/month
- M73 at $0.07/kWh, 526 TH/s
- $0.690/TH/month
Calculated as: (Power_kW × 720h × $0.07) ÷ TH/s. M70S: (3.5 × 720 × $0.07) ÷ 258 = $0.682. M73: (7.2 × 720 × $0.07) ÷ 526 = $0.690. These are electricity cost ratios only — not revenue figures.
The M73 costs more electricity per TH than the M70S. The M73's economic case rests on density (more TH in one chassis) and operational benefits (quiet hydro), not on efficiency. For equal hashrate, two M70S units (~516 TH/s combined) consume less electricity than one M73 (470–526 TH/s).
Why Hydro Cooling Matters
- →Near-silent operation: Hydro-cooled machines replace industrial fans with liquid cooling loops. The result is a fraction of the noise compared to air-cooled ASICs (~75–85 dB). For dense data center deployments or noise-sensitive environments, this is a meaningful operational benefit.
- →Rack density: 470–526 TH/s in a single chassis at ~7,200W vs. needing two M70S units for similar hashrate (~516 TH/s) at two rack positions and ~7,000W combined. For operators maximizing TH per unit of floor space, the M73's density is an advantage.
- →Heat management: Liquid cooling removes heat more efficiently than air, enabling stable operation in warm ambient environments without the same airflow requirements as air-cooled machines.
Hosting the M73 at Fathom Labs
Our Southeast Texas facility supports hydro-cooled ASIC deployment. The M73 can be hosted at the same $0.07/kWh all-in rate as our air-cooled machines — plus the standard one-time $1,020 per-machine onboarding fee. Contact us to confirm hydro capacity and availability.
Who Should Buy the M73?
- →Large-scale operators maximizing hashrate per rack unit in density-constrained facilities
- →Noise-sensitive deployments where air-cooled fan noise is a constraint
- →Operators with hydro infrastructure already in place looking to maximize TH in their facility
The M73 is generally not recommended for individual miners or efficiency-focused operators. For most first-time and individual miners, the Whatsminer M70S is the better choice.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Whatsminer M73's hashrate?
The Whatsminer M73 (base model) delivers 470–526 TH/s. This is the highest raw hashrate in the M70 generation at up to approximately 2× the M70S's 258 TH/s. Note: this review covers the base M73 only — the M73S and M73S+ are separate models with different specifications.
Is the Whatsminer M73 more energy-efficient than the M70S?
No. Despite being a newer, more expensive hydro-cooled machine, the Whatsminer M73 is less energy-efficient per terahash than the M70S. The M73 runs at approximately 14.5 J/TH; the M70S runs at approximately 13.5 J/TH. 'Hydro-cooled' does not mean 'more efficient' — it means the cooling method removes heat using liquid rather than air, enabling higher density and quieter operation without proportionally improving energy efficiency.
Why would someone choose the Whatsminer M73 over the M70S?
The M73 makes sense when: (1) you need maximum raw hashrate in minimum rack space — 470–526 TH/s in one chassis vs. two M70S units at ~516 TH/s combined but in two chassis; (2) you need near-silent operation — hydro-cooled machines produce significantly less noise than air-cooled; (3) you are scaling to a large hashrate in a density- or noise-constrained facility; or (4) you have existing hydro cooling infrastructure. For efficiency-focused or individual miners, the M70S is generally the better choice.
What infrastructure does the Whatsminer M73 require?
The Whatsminer M73 requires a hydro-cooled rack or immersion/liquid cooling loop — it cannot be operated in a standard air-cooled environment. Our Southeast Texas facility supports hydro-cooled ASIC deployment. The M73 also draws approximately 7,200W, requiring appropriate high-current power supply infrastructure.
